Baltimore, MD (January 31, 2011) – At a meeting of the Radnor-Winston Improvement Association this past weekend, City Councilman Bill Henry (D-4th) announced his intention to run for re-election to the 4th District seat on the Baltimore City Council. Henry defeated eight other challengers in 2007’s Democratic primary to succeed former City Councilman Kenneth N. Harris Sr., who gave up his seat to run for City Council President.

“I’ve worked hard fighting for our communities and neighborhoods,” said Henry. “I’m enjoying helping people, but I haven’t finished doing everything that we need done.”

At 42, one of the youngest members of the Council, Henry is vice chair of the Council’s Taxation, Finance & Economic Development committee and a member of the Education committee, the Judiciary & Legislative Investigations committee, the Policy & Planning committee and the Land Use & Transportation committee, where he chairs the Highways & Franchises subcommittee. Henry also represents the Council on the City’s Planning Commission and is believed to be the first African-American to hold that position.

Before being elected to represent North and Northeast Baltimore’s 4th District on the City Council, Henry spent eight years working in community development at the Patterson Park Community Development Corporation, where he completed the Greater Baltimore Committee’s LEADERship program. Prior to that, he spent almost seven years as staff in City Hall, first interning in the Mayor’s office under Kurt Schmoke and then in the City Council President’s office, working his way up from legislative aide under Mary Pat Clarke to chief of staff under Lawrence Bell. Henry also served as a congressional aide to Ben Cardin between “tours of duty” in City Hall, later working in the private sector as a community relations consultant.

For most of his life, Henry has been active in Baltimore’s civic affairs. He is a former board president of Citizens Planning and Housing Association and the Greater Homewood Community Corporation and has also served on the boards of the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Johns Hopkins Society of Black Alumni, and the Radnor-Winston Improvement Association. A longtime advocate for strengthening the York-Greenmount corridor, Henry co-chaired the Greenmount Avenue Revitalization Task Force and has served on the steering committee for the York Road Partnership.

A graduate of Loyola University, where he earned a master’s of business administration degree, with a concentration in finance, Henry’s undergraduate degree from the Johns Hopkins University is in social & behavioral sciences, with concentrations in urban studies and public policy. Henry also graduated from Loyola-Blakefield High School’s honors program and St. Mary’s parish school in Govans. A lifelong City resident, Henry lives in Radnor-Winston with his wife Ruth and their two daughters, Claudia and Amelia.
